Hear That? #3: Argall and Dickinson

Back for the first installment of Hear That? for 2012. There is some great audio fiction out there that deserves your attention.

PSEUDOPOD #264 offers Liz Argall’s A Study In Flesh and Mind, the story of a live model’s struggles to please the Great Teacher. In addition to writing, Liz is a live artist model and her experiences lend a quivering desperation to the story. Philippa Ballantine’s reading drives home the ache in the listener’s bones as the model’s session continues.

Beneath Ceaseless Skies #073 for audio fiction presents Seth Dickinson’s first story sale, The Traitor Baru cormorant, Her Field-General, and Their Wounds, read by BCS editor Scott H. Andrews. Seth Dickinson is a graduaste of the University of Chicago and the Alphoa Writer’s Workshop. He tells the story of Baru Cormorant, a traitorous general, and the political subtleties and realities of revolutions. His use of a traumatic brain injury as a means of driving the plot is very well done. Scott H. Anderson’s even reading allows the words to come to life.

As always, I hope you take the time to listen to these wonderful stories. Leave a comment; tell me what you thought of them. Feel free to share this recommendation with others, and don’t forget to drop by either site to leave a comment, or make a donation to help them fund their quest for great fiction.

Until next time, keep your ears open!

Thanks for the review! I’m glad you enjoyed the story, and I’m relieved to hear from a stroke survivor that I didn’t trivialize or mishandle the problems this kind of injury can entail.

    You’re most welcome.

As I said, the impact of my stroke is far less than anything Baru experienced, but I have done quite a bit of research in regards to neurological health and you handled her condition with dignity and a lack of self-pity that served to add depth to the character.

If this is your first story sale, rest assured I’ll be looking for more from you.
